Bad Dreams = Good Reminders

13 Jan

So I know it has been awhile, but I took a lengthy vacation and overall ‘check-out’ of life for a few months to wind down, relax, and see family. With saying that and being back to a routine of sorts, I woke early this morning from a bad dream…

Most of us have them. Those so-vivid-words-can’t-describe, waking-you-from-your–sleep kind of dreams. I wouldn’t say that I get them often, but I definitely get them more than some people and this one last night was so vivid in my head that I wouldn’t be able to describe it even if I could.

However, when I think of all the dreams I have, which occurs almost every night with multiple dreams, my first thought when I was younger was that I wish I never had them. Now, as an adult, I think I see my dreams more of a blessing than a curse, even the terrifying ones. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t enjoy waking in a sweat or not being able to go back to sleep. I do, however, enjoy the extra time I take to hug the nearest person I love (usually my husband) and to tell them that I love them one more time.

You see, these dreams remind me that taking time out of our busy lives, even just a few seconds, to let those we care for know can change everything. We never do know what will happen each day, and even though it may seem like a normal, boring day, it might not be. You never know. So instead of rushing out the door or ignoring your text messages, take some time and do more things like giving hugs or saying ‘I love you’ more.

My philosophy in life has always been to never have regrets, which means that since I do not know the future, trying new things will always happen. It also means that I must have discernment, because trying ALL things (like Yes Man, if you’ve seen it) may not necessarily be a good thing either and could lead to regretting things later as well. It’s a fine line that you walk in the middle, but I find that it’s worth it. It helps me to love more deeply.

Bad dreams can turn into something nice, if you think about, and living so far away from family as I do, it gives me that extra bit of motivation to write another handwritten letter or get on Skype more often or send a message through Facebook or even call a mobile number through the internet. Doing these things, letting the ones we love know how much we love them is what makes our lives better and filled with less regret in the end.

🙂
